Y = R + G + B
U = B - Y (approx) * constant
V = R - Y (approx) * constant
G = Y - B - R

G = Y - U+Y-V+Y
  = Y*3 - (U+V)  and a bit of gamma correction/weighting etc

Or put simply, green is what is left when you take away the red and blue
from the luminance.
