I totally agree with you on this topic.  Often the number of bits used 
to support digitized values is (mistakenly) equated to "dynamic range" 
but the number of bits only has to do with precision and not the 
range.  How values are interpreted defines the range.

As far as the non-linear portion of the film range goes, that is why 
we have colorists to make sense of it all.
