This is a bit of an exaggeration of the benefits.  Someone (Steve 
Shaw) mentioned here that for the "film" they shot in digital (Viper), 
130TB of video was captured on site.  130TB is a huge amount of data 
to collect on site.  There is a cost associated with capturing all of 
this data, transferring it to permanent storage, and then looking at 
it all.

It seems that it is very easy to capture a lot of data using video 
that the DP feels more uncertain of the result so he collects a lot 
more footage just to be sure.
