Certainly talking to Dale at Photon about the Genesis shot of the
miniatures on Superman Returns - he joked "I could see it in high res
right on set.. I was about to say "let's do another for safety - and
I stopped myself - because I could see that we had it already !"
Actually I love film and I work with it all the time, of course.
Actually we are recreating that Genesis pipeline with the Australian
Cinematographers Society and my training company... fxphd.com.
We will be shooting miniatures on the Milo rig - with Genesis - which
will then be used as part of our online daVinci training course,
starting in a couple of weeks. So I guess after that I will be in a
better position to comment. But to be fair - we are primarily
focusing on grading 35mm and 16mm film and only a part of the 12 week
course will look at Digital footage grading.
Warren Eagles will be doing most of the online daVinci training.
Re: HDR cameras and the need for them. I had always assumed that the
consumer would be able to dial up or down an exposure rather than
just look at an HDR as one image... having said that - there are some
excellent programs at mixing down an HDR to an 8 bit file that has
both detail in the whites and darks.
Re: 35mm lens remark - all I meant was that no longer do we need to
use special 2.4x HD lens to match 35mm - and as such this opens up HD
or Genesis style cameras to greater ease of use and production
management.
One final point... I hope I made myself clear that my comments were
made without trying to be dogmatic - just answering Peter's initial
email - and exchanging ideas... . I know have known Peter for many
years since URSA Gold days, - and I have always enjoyed good natured
discussions with him - and the odd pint!
