Different filmout facilities/systems will offer different methods for
transfer of linear data to film, some of which will work better than others.
The facility with the Arrilaser may have had the advantage of the Arri
CMS (Colour Management System) installed for video to film colour space
translation.
A "normal" film transfer of any "video" sourced material through the CMS
should be correctly converted (as much as is possible given the very
different colour gamuts of the media) during the record out, so that
colours and contrast match more naturally to a broadcast standard image.
Thats what the CMS is designed for.
There are more "tweaks" available in the CMS to fine tune, eg colour
gamut clipping & saturation levels, however a "standard" transfer would
render a very nice finished result over a system that does a simple
gamma conversion.
Also, I've found that there are some printing implications to correct
the overall colour.
And as Mark said, the log/lin thing can really screw up your output, so
lots of dialogue is needed to make certain that the facility understands
your material.
A film out service worth its salt will give you a proper transfer, or
should otherwise discuss the likely outcomes before you spend your money.
I used to run an Arrilaser and tested the CMS here, and its the best
conversion process I've seen so far "on-the-fly".
