I don't think that's likely. I don't believe even one one hundredth of
one percent of people actually buying movie tickets notice or give a
damn about anything discussed here or over on CML, except for content.
Let's be real. While we infinitely discuss the number of pixels which
can fit on the edge of a jaggie transition, the people who buy tickets
go for content and stars and that's it. Technical considerations aren't,
and the masses don't know and don't care. A recent survey showed that
more than half the people who bought TVs in the last five years believe
their sets are HD capable when they aren't, and more than half the
people who bought HD sets but have no source of HD content AT ALL
believe everything they watch is HD because the set is. More than half.
The only way those people are going to see jaggies is if they're the
size of the Rockies.
So while I believe we should always strive for the best possible result
both technically and aesthetically, the concept that poor technical
quality is going to keep the masses asses out of seats is a non-starter
for me.
