That is an interesting question. Most commercials still seem to be
broadcast in 4:3, but recently a number of companies (e.g. AT&T,
Microsoft, Sony, JVC, and maybe Apple) have started to broadcast their
commercials in 16:9 HDTV. The use of 16:9 for commercials is an
increasing trend. There is a recent style to display 16:9 commercials
using "letterbox" methods on 4:3 screens since it seems that the
audience is used to black bars due to the popularity of DVD.

Some of the 16:9 advertisements are produced quite nicely for the wide
screen, but in the original AT&T/SBC merger advertisement, the
commercial was quite clearly developed to work best on 4:3, with less
edge cropping in the 16:9 version.
