Thanks for the excellent explanation. On the computing side, it seems
that there is some debate as to whether RGB images should try to
preserve "video" levels then transforming from SDI-transferred YCbCr
to RGB. This is because it is claimed that there may be valuable data
hidden in the YCbCr below black and above white regions that a video
engineer or colorist might be able to reclaim. I argue that if there
is valuable data there, then the video source must be mis-adjusted and
the problem is best corrected at the source.
It seems that the RGB transfer issues are more significant than with
YCbCr. YCbCr is well defined by video standards but it seems that RGB
over SDI is not.
