[Tig] Curves for serious Color Correction

Hey Steve;

You wrote that "most serious colorists I've spoken to have an
aversion......(to curves)" The only reason I can think of is: Time. Using
the daVinci Custom curves takes time, and in today's Telecine room we have
lots of time pressures. I myself use the daVinci default gamma curve 95% of
the time. The other 5% I use a S-Curve, which I normally create as part of
my base-Mem in the last available Power Tier. (Or I setup a Powergrade
Memory).

Tom Nottingham wrote: "Tools like customs curves were designed to solve
problems like correcting
film that has undergone fading or other aging or processing problems." Yes,
you could use the curves to correct inter-layer dye fading....and if one
where working from a video or data source...it would be the way to go. But
if the faded pix are coming from my Telecine, I would much rather adjust the
Telecine LOG masking...for a better result. Playing with the LOG masking is
not for everyone....as you can Color correct yourself into a box pretty
quickly, but it is a cool way to create a blue channel that is almost gone.

My two cents.
