[Tig] Drupal modules

I'm posting this to the tig (off topic but related to TIG building of
site) in case someone
other than Jack Kelly (who has been most helpful) knows a bit more
about the Drupal
modules, thank you.

Jack, a really simple question: when I grab the tar file for an
external module, where
do I put it in the Drupal dir structure in order for it to be
recognized by either the admin=>modules
config panel or the admin=>settings panel? I did it yesterday but
today for some reason
i can't find where to put the tar files -- or if I have to untar them
myself and if so into which dir to
untar them to. I am downloading these modules on a remote machine
and then sftp'ing them
to the server, so I need to know where they go. The INSTALL and
README files just say "install
the modules in the usual manner."

man, there are a LOT of modules needed for what I want to do. I
found the og.module which is actually
called the Open Groups module, but now the "Ajax" module I assume is
actually called the "S/P Ajax" module,
and the "Mail Command" module must be named something else. Here is
the list of dependencies from
http://drupal.org/node/59335 (site walk-through for an og2list site)
Contributed modules to be installed and enabled (for og2list)

OG
OG2List
      gjg_group_tabs
      og_forum
MailCommand
event
basicevent
comment_mover
AJAX

I suspect that the "MailCommand" module may be named, in the Drupal
ext module
repository, just "Mail". I have most of the others, just need to
know where to put them
in the Drupal structure, so that the module manager panel finds them
(and do they need
to be untarred first).

thannks for any help!.

Rob
