This is a question to European colorists DOPs etc.
I have just attended at IBC a DCI session, audience about 150, of which
many were European.
The session included a proposal to modify DCI scan requiremnts such that
acadamy width scans could be 2048, with DCDM safe width changing to 2000
pixels, alowing a overfill of 48 pixels, to account for keystoning etc.
(Presented by Howard Lukk, of Disney.
This in itself seems reasonable, however I asked the question, "what is
DCI's display pixel sizing for European 1.66:1 format?" Silence!
I was told that no-one requires a 166:1 standard as it is not proposed by
Europeans as a digital projection ratio. I asked the audience if this was
the case. Seems it is, no-one questioed it. Yet last year in similar IBC/
DCI discussions it was an issue.
What is the real state of affairs regarding 1.66:1, is it really dead as a
Digital projection ratio. If anyone can answer, it must be colorists and
DOPs on the TIG.
cheers
