It was actually an Irishman - George Bernard Shaw - who said "England  
and America are two countries divided by a common language".

Or, as Oscar Wilde put it, "We really have everything in common with  
America nowadays, except, of course, language."

I shall be heading across the Atlantic later this week for NAB, ready  
with commendable patience for all those Americans who think I have a  
"cute accent". I, of course, do not have an accent: I am English. It  
is Americans who speak our language with an accent.
