It was actually an Irishman - George Bernard Shaw - who said "England
and America are two countries divided by a common language".
Or, as Oscar Wilde put it, "We really have everything in common with
America nowadays, except, of course, language."
I shall be heading across the Atlantic later this week for NAB, ready
with commendable patience for all those Americans who think I have a
"cute accent". I, of course, do not have an accent: I am English. It
is Americans who speak our language with an accent.
