HD CRTs would have to be very large (on the order of 72") to have the
bandwidth (dot size/ aperture grille) to truly reproduce the information
available in a 1920x1080 signal.

One thing that nobody seems to mention is with the new LED backlights we
have a smoother spectral intensity.  This compared to the spikes of the
phosphor red spectrum of a CRT.  The old cold cathode backlights also had an
uneven spectral intensity.
The differences I noticed had to do with the subtle color tones, such as
skin. Also the gamma near black was different.

I hung around the Sony display for a while, and was amazed how many people
could not pick which of the three displays was the CRT, although the
difference was obvious to me.

With the CRT being a dead technology for our business, we will have to
adjust to a new (better/different) display technology.  The old standards
need to be shredded and new standards set based on the enhanced capabilities
of the newer display technologies (brighter, higher contrast, wider color
gamut, better linearity).
Until that is accomplished, the road to the future is very bumpy!

The mechanical shape of the aperture grill on a Trinitron CRT basically acts
as a low-pass filter, and as a result it masks high frequency noise.  LCDs
(particularly native panels) do not have this effect and show the noise
unfiltered.  Which is one of the big reasons why many consumers are pretty
disappointed with their purchase of large screen native panels and watching
noisy scaled standard definition signals.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.  But we also sell an LCD
pixel-per-pixel monitor that freaks people out when they see how much
noise is actually on the image.  Which they then blame on the monitor
because it "doesn't show on the CRT".
