I appreciate Bob F's comments, but I am not quite ready to break out
the chopsticks to eat my words just yet.
What we are actually saying is that you can buy a top of the line
Mac, then add some additional processing power by packing out the PCI
slots, then buy some control surfaces because no-one is going to do
colour correction using a one-button mouse. Better chuck in the new
AJA box for I/O...
You see where I am going. It's still not going to be the price of a
da Vinci or a Pandora, but it is no longer orders of magnitude cheaper.
I am much more in sympathy with the thoughts of Steven Bradford. It
is a great way to give talented students a way to learn about the
language of colour, in just the way that Final Cut Pro and HDV gives
them a way to learn the language of storytelling.
We will, of course, have to accept that there will be a million (all
right, close to 800,000) people playing with it who think they are
colorists but have no talent. But we lived with the same problem when
PageMaker was going to make all graphic designers redundant, and we
survived.
