I love that there can be two "Bob F."s in a dicussion. One famous,
the other not. :-)

While some tools are obviously of no value, the abilities that someone
has with the tool make all the difference. Given a hammer, a master
craftsman can accomplish wonders while the beginner can only produce
bent nails. A beginner will be able to do a few useful things with
Photoshop but will barely scratch the surface of what is actually
possible with the software. A professional will accomplish wonders
with Photoshop, and in fact professionals use Photoshop to do
wonderful things each and every day since it is the clear market
leader for still-image editing.
While I am not a colorist, I have been paying attention for the past
1-1/2 years or so and notice that there have been some profound
changes during that short time. When I first joined the Tig list
there were long discussions of what it took to earn a seat in the
"chair" and about the established industry pecking order. It seems
that in this short time there have been many changes and while there
continues to be a place for the exalted few who occupy the "chair" of
the high-end colorist suite, many more levels are being added and the
entry point is lower. In fact it is clear that those identified as
"colorists" have added many more "caps" to their collection and
perform many more tasks than those originally occupied by the
"colorist".
