The LA Times today has a column by Patrick Goldstein that
makes for interesting reading:

according to Goldstein:
1) the studios were predisposed from the start of talks not to give
any ground on "new media" residuals because they don't want to set a
precedent for the upcoming SAG contract renewal on June 30.
2) the writers would be well served to investigate deals with new
media producers, thereby creating their own new market, shutting out
the studios who will be "stuck with 24-hour Reality TV programming"...
Google, Yahoo, Mark Cuban were mentioned as possible conduits. There
do appear to be interesting alternatives for the writers, outside of
the studios.
3) the studios last week hired Mark Fabiani and Chris Lehane, former
aides and advisors to Bill Clinton and Al Gore, who have reputations
for PR damage control and spin.
