Many thanks. I hadn't totally thought it through before posting to the list.

I can now read the sample file I have with a 4096 entries (16x16x16 
matrix), and writing such a file won't be an issue. If anyone has such a 
lut but with different precision would they mind sending it to me 
off-list? It would be handy to test my code against as many files as 
possible.
