This is a really interesting article. Perhaps part of the solution is
to archive on film since film has already been demonstrated to last.
A special film print can be made on a type of film with low grain and
high dynamic range. Large film (e.g. 65mm) can be used to help
minimize any loss. The colors used for the print would be designed
for long-term archiving rather than viewing. Additional information
can be added to the archive film image which helps assure accurate
retrieval of the data.
The official archive print would be used as a form of backup in case
the digital preservation method fails.
Given the dramatic increase in storage densities, there is reason to
believe that the problem with digital preservation will solve itself
over time.
