I think one prospective plan was described to me as being something
like arricode or aatoncode, but of course being able to use the whole
frame, and also being able to use (as you mention) grayscale, with the
possibility of color in a matrix thus quite complex, more bits per
frame than you could ever need.

But this scheme would not solve the problem of maintaining the
equipment to read the code, some 50-100 years after its invention. So
you then return to the image on film being more viable an archive
medium than the representation of it.
