I am not an expert on this topic but since you mention "Linux/Unix" it 
is worth mentioning that Macromedia "Flash" SWF (version 7) animations 
are supported there.  Obviously Quicktime/MPEG4 is usually not due to 
patent licensing issues.

It seems that Mozilla may have some other video format it supports but 
I am not sure what it may be.
