I asked Sony if the do a colorspace conversion internally, and they do. We have tried many different ways of converting from HD to SD. Using FCP Compressor, Shake, Terranex didnot give as good result as doing a plain conversion direct from the HDSR-tape. That is also by far the quickest way of doing it. Regarding upconversion the Terranex does a beautiful job and is highly recommended.

I suppose it depends by which method you convert (you did mean convert and not clone?) it to SD. I'm guessing that you are using the downconverted output of a VT?
I would have expected that any SD 601 compliant output on a VT would by definition have the correct colour space, or it wouldn't be 601 compliant?
But I haven't checked yet. Have you tried asking Sony?
If you have a legaliser you could put some appropriate test sigs through the deck and switch it in and out to see if there is any difference.
(That was a long way of saying I don't know!) woz
