Some searching turned up an excellent article in salon.com about end
credits, written by Robert Glatzer, NY Times film critic and former
director:

In reading various material regarding the history of end credits, I
remembered that it really wasn't until the 1970s that end credits became
extensive-  perhaps with the first Star Wars film.  Before that they
just kind of rolled out and were gone.
