There is a big energy-saving drive here in Australia too - or at least, the
nergy companies are putting on a show of it (as if they _want_ to sell less
electricity!).
So they've had door-to-door offers of a boxful of these fluoro lamps (with
ES or bayonet fittings).
During renovations a couple of years ago, we ended up with new light
fittings in almost every room in the house. Not a single one of them takes
these standard fittings. Mostly we have quartz halogen lamps. I have no idea
where they sit in the energy-efficiency stakes compared with incandescent,
but they are what they are. If I want to make a show of being green during
this campaign, I have to find another way.
So I called the electricity company and asked about switching over to their
"green electricity" rate. You pay more per KwH (!) and they undertake to
source that much energy from a non-coal-powered supplier. Result? They said
a representative would call me back: two weeks later I had a call from their
call centre in India suggesting I switch my _gas_ account to them.
Like Steve, I despair at the political leadership (here, as in the USA), but
I'm quite certain that the "big bad corporations" have a lot to answer for.
Though really it's the system that is to blame: if their business model is
to sell power (or water, or whatever), and if they are corporations with
shareholders, then you can't expect them to be enthusiastic about steps to
limit their sales.
Anyway, (back to light) I don't much like the light from flouros either. You
can't beat a continuous spectrum with an honest colour temperature for a
warm cosy natural feeling. The sun's not flourescent.
