Rob,
The choice for the fluorescent bulb in Brazil was a government
suggestion in 2001, the year when Brazil almost suffered a shortage
of energy that cam to be known as the "apagão".
It happens that suddenly the government discovered they didn't invest
enough money in electrical power plants and due to the dry weather
that year (most of Brazilian power supply comes from hydropower) the
country could suffer from major power shortage.
Instead of investing in alternative power sources the government
decided that everyone should use at least 20% less energy than we
were used to, otherwise we would pay a bill and would even have our
power diconnected, so one of the ways of achieving this saving was
switching for these fluorescent bulbs.
I replaced some of my apartments bulbs for these fluorescent ones,
but I don't like their color rendition (although there are some of
then that produce yellow light) nor the way they flick.
Well, guess that's the kind of thing we must get used to when we live
in a Third World country.
