Is it electric then?

The first time I stayed in a private home in Brasil I was stunned
(can't say shocked in this case) to see how I was to take a shower.
The water for a hot shower is heated in the shower fixture itself,
the water passing through a kind of reverse-immersion coil heater
system that is energized at 220 volts, the wires to the shower head
in some homes completely exposed and even without insulation.

It took a while to get used to this idea... one regulates the
temperature
of the shower by the amount of flow: faster flow, lower temperature, and
vice versa.

(as an aside, another cultural difference not easy to manage: most homes
and apartments have doorlocks that require a key on both sides, and
the key
is sometimes removed on the inside, effectively requiring the
resident to
find the key in order to exit the residence. When I ask about fire
regulations,
I'm told there aren't any, or that there aren't many fires here
[which actually
could be in its own way true, as most construction is of masonry and
not wood])
