The desire to work with those machines was the main reason I applied for an
engineering job at VTA in 1979. When VTA diversified into subsidiaries, I
followed the one that eventually became daVinci Systems, but I still have
fond memories of the amazing 9K. Its "vaccuum modulator" was perhaps the
most unique device it contained (although the Ampex AVR-1 must have had
something similar) and its ability to handle multiple generations without
too much degradation was really remarkable. As Peter Swinson mentioned,
Rank Cintel had a lot to do with the design -- not only with the transport
frame but also the very similar (if not identical) capstan and servo design.
IVC cameras, too, offered a very good performance level for their price, and
the one-inch helicals could have done really well if it hadn't been for the
U-Matic format that totally eroded their market.
I suppose a disclaimer is fairly useless considering how long they've been
out of business. Nevertheless, I never got anything from them other than a
newsletter and a factory tour. Actually, the memorable "cruise" around
Greater Atlanta in the sales rep's Pantera might count ??
