Indeed, my Sharp LCD (LC26P70) television uses an ambient light
sensor to determine how bright it sets its backlight. Works very
nicely, too - responds to changes in about a second with decently
fine grained control. It also has an automatic volume control, but
that responds too quickly and tends to make things sound like they've
been processed with Dolby C.

Philips also has their "Ambilight" system which provides their LCD
sets with their own reference background - and it works well.
