Actually, you might be surprised by how much better HDMI is than component.
Most modern DVD players and STBs process everything digitally internally
and must convert to analogue via a D/A for the component outputs. Likewise,
most modern HD sets also process everything internally and must convert
component signals back to digital with an A/D. This process definitely has
an adverse effect on quality and artifacts.
When I first got my set, I tried an experiment with OTA HD (the highest
quality HD signal I had access to at home) and I could notice a difference
between HDMI and component from the same source. It was somewhat subtle but
very real even from normal viewing distances. Also, with HDMI, you have
automatic aspect ratio control (if your set supports it). So, I'd say that
it is certainly worth the cost of a HDMI cable (shop around on the net and
you can find one for around $25 - they all perform the same) and I'd
recommend using one. FYI, HDMI 1.3 is now coming out that that supports 10
bit RGB compared to the 8 bit RGB of the earlier standard. They both use
the same cable.
