Results vary quite a bit depending on the equipment and cables
involved. In my case I am using very high end analog video cables
with calibrated signal paths. With test signals I can notice a small
degree of "ringing" which is not present with the HDMI interface.
The impact is hardly noticeable with normal video content. With lower
cost equipment and cables, I expect that the difference is much
larger.
As another poster mentioned, ultimately HDMI should be cheaper than
analogue since fewer cables are required and the requirements for
"digital" DVI cables are well specified and don't additionally benefit
from proprietary "magic" as long as cable lengths are reasonable. If
TV vendors do their part (will they ever wake up and smell the
coffee?) then standard digital values on the HDMI input will result in
standard values on the display, avoiding the need for additional
costly calibration.
