>Is this going on all over the world now?
Yes, and worse. Some sets actually have a "store demo" mode which cranks
contrast up to "11" and saturation to "9", and color temp to 9300. It's all
about catching the eye of the consumer, who, it has been repeatedly
demonstrated, is mostly woefully ignorant when buying a set.
Recent statistics indicate that well over 50% of the people buying HD capable
sets in the last year believe they're seeing everything in HD because they
bought the set, for example. Additionally, more than half that same group of
buyers had no HD source whatsoever.
And most sets default to a high contrast cool look out of the box, and most
buyers never bother to change that, because the factory knows best.
>Or are tv's bought because how they fit in with the furniture?
A surprisingly large number of sets are bought for exactly that reason. The
two civilians I know who have bought new HD capable sets in the last 6 months
used precisely that criteria.
