[Tig] 888 and DUI

Although I would suggest to contact da Vinci first for a more complete set of manuals and any help (Dwaine is great), I know I have a set of some documentation and extra new (then) features bulletins (custom curves, etc.) laying around somewhere. Feel free to contact me.

Just out of curiosity, where did your system come from? We got rid of our 888 non-DUI with external TLC about 2 years ago (traded it back to da Vinci towards a newer system), and I was told that it was the last existing non-DUI in service in the world. I figured da Vinci may sell it cheap to a school or something.

The thing is, with your system, you can do just about everything that a DUI can do with color, so I wouldn't sweat it too much. I may be wrong, but I think the DUI was much of the same processing hardware. But if you used a DUI for one day, you would certainly do everything you could to get one. The more modern interface (last updated in 2001 in think, while non-DUI was final in '92 or '93) makes every aspect of your work go by faster, plus your have frame grabs for your scenes (VSRs - visual scene representation) which relates back to speed and ease of use. Plus your clients won't ask you "is this thing digital?". The '80s UNIX terminal style interface is a fun flashback, but I'd say 80% or more of what you learn on the non-DUI will carry over to the DUI, and you'll be up and running on the DUI with a day or so of training (if that).

Funny thing is, even if my old non-DUI was the last one in service (which I guess is not the case anymore), an equipment broker friend of mine sold a da Vinci Classic within the last year!

Either way, make sure you have a good engineer set it up (or call da Vinci) with all the right external equipment, and then play around for a while (if you will be the colorist), or if you're interested in learning, bring in a colorist to your facility and observe. This is how I learned. Although a few dedicated days of training will have you up and running in no time.

Good luck!
