That is interesting.  I notice that the external power modules 
delivered with current LaCie units have a considerably higher power 
rating than the ones that came with LaCie drives two years ago. 
There can be a relationship between internal power supply failure and 
the external power supply capacity.  If the external power supply does 
not provide enough voltage, then the internal power supply has to work 
harder and is more likely to burn up.
