SAS and SATA-II are both 3Gbit links. But SAS drives have more
intelligence in the drives which makes them better for multi-threaded
server use.

The key here is "years past". The enterprise SCSI drives are of
course faster now since they spin over twice as fast. We have all
encountered old SCSI drives since they usually just keep running
without fail.

That is a key point. If the storage is written a limited number of
times, then FLASH storage makes sense as long as it is cost effective.

Even though current SCSI/FC drives provide a bit-error rate about 10X
better than typical SATA drives, they are clearly not cost effective
for drives used only for "transport", as long as a backup copy is
available.
