>Some DVD players have a "Cinema" mode for full dynamic range, and a
"Don't wake the neighbours" mode that you can select to compress the
sound for late at night.

>I wish my car radio had a selectable audio compression mode: I prefer
to listen to classical music while driving (it's better for the rage
factor), and the classical stations tend to transmit completely
uncompressed in the belief that their audience is sitting in a fully
insulated listening room.
>In the car, if you turn it up to hear the 'piano' over the traffic, the
'forte' blows out the speakers.

FYI: My Motorola DCT6416 Dual HD Tuner DVR has 3 settings for audio
dynamic range compression:
NONE, MILD & HEAVY. Any setting other than HEAVY results in REMOTE
MUTING REQUIRED to avoid a significant jump between DTV Dolby Digital
tracks and those of adverts & promo's. (I agree KTTV has loud promos.)
My (home) DVD players have either a MANNERS MODE or NIGHTTIME MODE each.

I also vote for the dynamic range control for the in-dash units, esp.
the DVD ones w/ the motorized display and DD playback. High compression
would make it possible to hear music with the windows open (what'd you
say...and watch the raod, NOT the movie).

P.S. I know that Sirius Satellite radio has a recording function, but I
want that TiVo effect for my favorite NPR shows (audio only please). I
find myself sitting in the driveway refusing to miss some great
discussion. Okay, please add a USB socket so I can download the
recording from the receiver to a thumb drive/MP3 player so I can listen
elsewhere.
I think I saw an off-brand id-dash unit with both features, but forgot
where!
Sorry this got so off topic, but we need MORE dynamic range control
everywhere!!
