I also remember Hue Curves working inside vignettes and keys in early
versions of FT.
It is my understanding that the functionality had to be altered to maintain
compatibility with some of the newer graphics cards. That is to say the
software was altered in order that the program does not behave differently
according to what hardware you use.
I do not know that for sure, but that is my understanding.

I think they are. FCS2 is referred to as a "professional application" and
Final Cut Pro is certainly aimed at professional editors. However, it is a
mass market product and is probably not going to compete directly with the
more specialist manufacturers.
If someone asks how do you become a colorist, as they often do, learning
Color would be a good start.
