Because those expensive turnkey systems are not expensive because of  
their feature set, but because of their limited production numbers.

Apple are not trying to compete with Lustre, DaVinci or Quantel,  
they're trying to provide Avid Symphony-style features in a software- 
only product, and they're doing a pretty good job of it.
