I would say yes. When I was at USC, back at the dawn of the home VCR, we
only saw 35mm prints of feature films in our classes, and these usually
came direct from the studios. They looked stunning. I remember we had a
Harold Lloyd festival, for that the films came direct from his vault,
and it was a revelation to see "silent" films from the twenties, the way
people saw them when they were first released. Incredible, and perfect,
and really the ones from the mid twenties, were pristine and not at all
what we associate with that old silent film look. Correct speed, no
flickering, beautiful tonal range, sharpness, etc. This was also the
time when there were a lot of vintage theatres operating in LA, and the
B&W 30s and 40s films looked beautiful, these too I believe were prints
direct from the studio vaults.
