that's right, I made the same comment in a previous post, but I  
attributed
the first lengthening of credits to George Lucas and Star Wars.  But you
would know, Steve, because you probably screened _2001_ several times
in 1983 while working with the MGM library.

Amazing now to realize this film was made in 1965, so long ago, yet  
seemed
so modern.  There's a good entry about it in the wikipedia:
