Greetings fellow Tiggers,
Another telecine specialist is no longer with us......
Some of you may, or may not know, a friend and colleague, Malcom Todd passed away late last year.
He died in Adelaide, South Australia in the arms of his extended family.
Before Mal was taken ill his career was based in Sydney.
So....As we do.....Down Under.....
I would like to inform our community that next week his old buddies have arranged a 'memorial'
remembrance evening for Mal. This is to be held on Friday 16 March 2007........It will be a big night.
It will be held at the Crows Nest Hotel at Crows Nest on the North Shore, Sydney, Australia.
All who have known Mal are welcome.
In Brief
Mal was the son of the man who designed the mechanics of the Rank MK 11 'twin lens' telecine, 'pull
down optically'
with the twin lens mechanism.
Mal subsequently became a Rank Cintel field engineer when Telecines were not maintained with a
keyboard......
thence seduced to the post production industry here in Sydney Australia where he made his life.
A 'true' telecine engineer had a 'tweeker' in his top pocket at _all_ times.......
He was the ONLY southern recipient of the Options Telecine 'Tweekers' Award.....The impressive award
[no longer issued]
If you don't know what a tweeker is.....stand in the hall of mirrors and take a look look at
yourself and weep.
For those of you who remember when the 'notches' for grade corrections were manually made on punched
paper
tape 'off line' you will understand the effect that Mal made on the Australian T/C industry. He
developed and built a TTL
multi-event grading memory for the old 'manual' Topsy panels from Cintel .........
Have you ever heard of wire wrap ?.
And the late nights Mal and myself battled with EECO edit programmers and [AAaaargh] RCA 2" Quad VTR's
[especially the 'Pal' Module] are legendary. I didnt mention the late night relaxiation sessions to
recover.....
I have had the pleasure of working with a 'proper' telecine engineer from the MK 11 to Ursa to
Spirit to C reality
We were not board changers......
If you remember Mal.... feel free to send me a scary 'Malcolm' Story, and I will 'for my part' pass
it on to his wife and kids and everybodyon the night.
So all...... lift a glass on the 16 March 2007 and remember Malcolm.......... he was a good man
cheers
Richo
