The start of the twentieth century for Film would be in 1903  with the
first Closeups, and the transition of films from being little more than
novelty clips to becoming full story dramas. Before that film was in the
tradition of  effects for vaudeville and magic lantern shows and magic
acts. After that it became it's own stand alone art form.

How's that?
