I wonder how well all those commercial encoders are protected against
EMP? And other shocks?

What is it that makes us expert in everyone else's fields of endeavour?
Is it that our problems are so hard and theirs are so easy?

from many companies, including a non military division of his company,
he later proudly told me that they had spent 6 months designing an
encoder to convert the camera output to PAL!  And apparently it was not
that good.
