this resonates with me, as LA became after my living there for 25
years a city of
automatons vying for the priciest options on the newest traffic-
snarling road beast,
and as well a place where every conversation eventually turns to the
value of real
estate and the properties of one's own automobile. I eventually
found the city anti-
intellectual, with exceptions.

I do miss the trails and the mountains, which are the best in the
world (this last
from John Muir, who climbed in all the world's major ranges).

or a visit from neighbors in Andomeda or other galaxy? nothing like
a common threat to
change your perspective.
