There are many important motion image properties:
o color gammut (available color range)
o dynamic range (intensity range between black and white)
o spatial resolution (horizontal/vertical resolution)
o temporal resolution (sample updates per time unit)
o sample resolution (number of bits in a sample)
o background noise level
but in the end, if a crappy compression algorithm is involved, then
the other properties may not matter at all. We have all seen
excellent SDTV images (e.g. good DVD) and terrible SDTV images
(massively compressed satellite image). The good SDTV image and the
lousy SDTV image had the same abilities at their disposal but the
lousy image was severely damaged by excessive compression and has
little "definition" left at all.
