Right.  I have yet to see a 16x9 TV which offers a masking option for 
when it is displaying 4x3 content.  As a result, ugly stuff may be 
displayed on the sides.

With an all-digital path, it would be nice to see the image 
pixel-for-pixel, but any image which takes an analog path needs the 
overscan (or masking).
