Perhaps the concept of a "guild" is more apt? Furthering and
maintaining the craft to high standards, acting as at least a first-pass
junk filter. Heck, imagine if they asked the engineers to take over the
writing while the strike is on? "The Adventures of Radio Boy", "Two Men
and a Greenie", "Rank".
Not to say there isn't talent elsewhere. Some of the best editors I
came across got their break when NABET went on strike. Secretaries,
assistants etc, found they had the talent and they went on to successful
careers.
The notion of the union or guild is still valid, but every once in a
while it might not be a bad thing to be peel it back and expose it to
the elements and "air it out".

When I think of "union" I think of traditionally mistreated blue
collar occupations like coal mining and flying jumbo jets. Can
someone please fill me in as to why there is a writers union at all?
Are script writers normally among the "downtrodden". Script writing
seems like it should be a very creative and mentally stimulating
occupation. I sense that there must be some interesting history
behind this.
