Yes, of course.  Generally industries where individuals have no 
recourse are the ones which unionize.  In other words, these are 
industries where individual recognition and talent don't make much 
difference since the individuals are easily replaced by the next in 
line.  It seems to me that screen writers should have plenty of 
opportunity for individual recognition and that the good ones are not 
easily replaced.  This is perhaps much more true now than back in 1921 
when the guild was formed.  Viewers will surely notice if their 
favorite shows suddenly lose their sparkle and the thrill is gone. 
But perhaps without the guild, writers for less famous shows would not 
be sufficiently rewarded.
