The problem with this form of advertising is that it only captures
poor people with no money to spend. People with money to spend will
simply stop watching such programs and switch to a different channel
or to "pay" TV. The only exception to this rule is for shows like
MTV's "A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila" and FUSE TV's "Rad Girls"
where the banner adds do not further detract from the show.
Using advertising to pay for the shows made a whole lot of sense when
there were very few channels to choose from but with today's 500
channel line-ups, viewers can simply change channels.
The only shows I watch which have advertisements are high quality
broadcast programming in HD like "CSI", "Desperate Housewives", and
"Greys Anatomy". Then again, I have a DVR and skip over most of the
adds.
