These days I think so many people multitask that the ads are naturally avoided with a simple shift of focus. I know that my wife and I rarely just watch TV. I do freelance design work, she knits or does jewelry making.
Once when were "just watching" TBS HD we noticed that the commercial inserts were badly timed which, in addition to cutting in the wrong moments, revealed how scenes really did not cut against each other when the ad was mis-placed. Most of these shows are cut for ad insertion and don't feel right without something in between various cuts.
