As a Studio Manager on West 57th St., I had to be there very early
for morning shoots to open the Scene Dock for the truck to unload the
flats or special lighting equipment. Most shoots were video, but
occasionally a film shoot would be scheduled (Director Nat Eisenberg
comes to mind) and when I'd go out to help the guys unload the truck
they'd look at me like I was a street urchin, and say "this is a
Teamsters crew." Meaning if I got any closer to the truck I was
coleslaw.
Other memorable Directors of commercials in that era (the 70s) were
Ruben Shapiro (Centipede Films), Jean Harrison, Alan Shevlo, John
Fengler (US Films) and Hal Tulchin (drove a Lincoln). In addition
to providing the bagels (5 types) lox and cream cheese, black bread,
orange juice and coffee for the shoots, Hal had me take care of his
Lincoln while he was busy on the set. I once took the liberty of
driving it down to Irving's Deli on 9th Av. to get more bagels,
figured it was a noble deed.
