Hi Ted
I read the pdf on the Capitol studios and echo chambers, and sent it
as well to
Oscar Castro-Neves, who has used them. The word "natural" to
describe these chambers is slightly incorrect however, as they are
fabricated. I believe the adjective "acoustic" describes them
more accurately.
In the 70s, Oscar and Paul Winter dedicated a few months to
recording tracks for The Paul Winter Consort inside the Cathedral of
St. John the Divine in upper Manhattan. According to them, the
acoustic properties of this space are unique and quite
extraordinary. Winter went on to do various experiments in the
Grand Canyon and various other locations in and around the
southwestern US, using slot canyons, notched and otherwise naturally
focused amphitheaters, which can be heard in his recordings of that
era.
